Internships

Completing an internship is a great way for someone to consistently contribute to Muslim anti-racism efforts. MuslimARC is committed to providing a work experience that will serve people well after they work with us.

Interns will

  • join a dynamic and engaging team
  • gain marketable skills
  • have an opportunity to complete trainings and receive other membership perks; and
  • be able to shape the future of the organization.

Internships are unpaid, as are our staff positions at the time. Like staff members, interns are expected work remotely from their location, though they may also be able to work with other MuslimARC members or staff on-the-ground if opportunities arise.

Interns who are not already members of MuslimARC will need to successfully complete our membership process. Interns are expected to log between 2-10 hours of work per week, depending on the position. See below for information about our current openings and information regarding how you can apply. For questions, email jobs@muslimarc.org.

Assistant to Programming Director

Duration: 4 months (with option to extend)

Successful candidate will report and work directly with the Programming Director of MuslimARC, providing administrative and logistical support as well as assisting with research and writing MuslimARC training and content.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing MuslimARC calendar for meetings and upcoming events
  • Schedule travel, appointments and meetings.
  • Organizing Programming Resources in DropBox
  • Coordinate special projects and assisting with volunteer management
  • Collect and compile reports weekly and monthly
  • Some copy-editing or drafting written material
  • Develop surveys, assessments, and conducting online research involving MuslimARC Programming
  • Managing minor email-related tasks

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have excellent organizational skills
  • Pay great attention to detail
  • Possess strong writing skills
  • Conduct themselves professionally
  • Be trustworthy
  • Have experience with programs like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Be tech-savvy
  • Prior experience in anti-racism work, research, or education/training

Curriculum Design and Development Intern
Summary: MuslimARC offers free and low cost anti-racism curriculum and training to educators and administrators who work in full and part time Islamic schools.

Position Summary: Graduate students, teachers on break, sabbatical or retired teachers can gain experience by updating and redesigning existing curriculum, and creating new curriculum for educators in Islamic schools. This position is ideal for an education graduate student with an interest in anti-racism work in the Muslim community or for teacher who is on leave or retired, but still interested utilizing their skills and experience to improve Islamic education.

Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluating and updating materials in the Islamic School Anti-Racist Education Resource Guide
  • Designing, writing, or modifying training curriculum, evaluation, and support materials for primary and secondary school educators
  • Designing, writing, and modifying primary and secondary school lesson plans
  • Curating existing anti-racist resources for educators

Time required: 3-5 hours per week (may vary from week to week)

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in curriculum development is essential
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Background in teaching or experience in curriculum design is preferred
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn anti-racist pedagogies, Common Core alignment, and Islamic studies

Social Media Intern 1
Duration: 6 months

Supervised by the Executive Director/Social Media Chair, this position focuses on taking content from MuslimARC Twitter, Facebook, reMARC, and website and re-developing it for other platforms, including YouTube, Instagram, and Tumblr. Also responsible for letting supervisors know of issues that need to be addressed and conversations MuslimARC should know about.

Applicant should be active on social media and able to proficiently use all platforms. Candidate should be detailed oriented, focused, and enthusiastic.

Social Media Intern 2
Duration: 6 months

Supervised by the Executive Director/Social Media Chair, this position focuses on create content according to guidelines set up by Social Media Chair and Programming Director. Social Media Co-Chair will train candidate. Content needed on monthly bases. Should not require more than 3-6 hours weekly.

Applicant should be able to use QuickTime and preferably own a MAC (or PC with GIF creating program). Candidate should be detailed oriented, focused, and enthusiastic.

Editorial Intern
Duration: 6 months

Supervised by the Programming Director/Social Media Chair, this position focuses on the stages of reviewing and editing blog posts for #reMARC. Also responsible for finding new content to put up on blog by contacting individuals suggested by supervisors to write for reMARC. Executive Director will train candidate.

Preferred: Applicant should have a background in Writing and editing.

Mandatory: The ideal candidate should have two years of college courses and be working toward a degree in a related field or an equivalent background. Candidate should be detailed oriented, focused, and have exceptional editing skills.

Steering Committee Positions

The Steering Committee of MuslimARC is the executive body of the organization. Steering members are responsible for daily operations. Both Directors and Chairs sit on the Steering Committee. Directors also sit on the Board of Directors of MuslimARC.

Steering members are currently unpaid for their commitments. They are required to attend Steering meetings (late Sunday afternoons), complete projects, and lead their volunteer teams. Those on Steering most directly shape the future of the organization, both in the short term and the long term.

For this reason, Steering Members must be organized, responsive, creative, and have a willingness to examine their own privileges and biases while working in this multicultural organization. They must be team players. Members must possess above average communication skills and show a passion for the work of MuslimARC.

Steering Members are expected work remotely from their location, though they may also be able to work with other MuslimARC members or staff on-the-ground if opportunities arise.

Membership Development Chair
Duration: 6 months or longer

Manage volunteer resources to assist in the delivery of MuslimARC’s programs and services. This includes directly managing volunteers, and/or providing guidance, support, resources and tools to staff who supervise volunteers. The Membership Development Chair will Recruit and orientate new MuslimARC members. oversee volunteer assignments and task management for members, as well as recruit members for volunteering tasks.

Duties/Responsibilities: Reviewing profiles and submitted information of new and existing members, contacting members via phone and email, responding to inquiries about volunteer tasks, serve as liaison between Directors and volunteers.

Time required: 5-10 hours per week (may vary from week to week)

Desired qualifications: Reliable. Understanding of non-profit management, ability to work remotely. Familiar with NationBuilder or Database Management, Google Groups, Google Docs spreadsheets, and Facebook Groups.

Plan the volunteer program/service

  • Develop and implement goals and objectives for the volunteer program which reflect MuslimARC’s mission
  • Assess the need for volunteers to enhance program/service delivery
  • Conduct ongoing evaluation of the programs and services delivered by volunteers and help team to implement improvements as necessary
  • Develop, administer, and review policies and procedures that reflect MuslimARC’s  overall values
  • Identify volunteer assignments that provide meaningful work for volunteers and write the volunteer position descriptions in consultation with the board when appropriate
  • Maintain volunteer records  and records of volunteer hours  according to established procedures
  • Plan and implement formal and informal volunteer recognition activities to recognize the contribution of volunteers to the organization
